Yoga is powerful medicine....
Yoga is so much more than just exercise. It's a self care tool that can be used to retrain the muscles, strengthen the body and quiet the mind. I see it as an active version of massage. Gentle movement, meditation, breathwork and alignment are a powerful combination. Of course, I'd love to share it with you. Please join me for some nurturing, healing movement.
I offer traditional Hatha Yoga classes, integrating styles from a variety of yoga traditions. Class emphasis is on breath-linked movement, body alignment, creating body awareness, and learning to “listen to your body.” A typical class may incorporate meditation, pranayama (breath techniques), gentle movement, and both standing and seated postures. From personal experience, I hold a strong belief in the healing power of movement. As a massage therapist, I offer a holistic perspective of yoga, seeing it as “powerful medicine” with healing potential for all aspects of body, mind and spirit. My Hatha Yoga classes are suitable for all bodies, including beginners and those with physical challenges and joint issues. Modifications always offered.
Yin Yoga is known as “the quiet yoga.” It is a more meditative form of yoga. There are no sun salutations or standing postures. In Yin Yoga, floor postures are held passively for several minutes in order to access a safe and positive “stress” on the deep layers of connective tissue in the body. It is great for all body types, ranging from beginners and seniors to athletes. It is especially good for those with existing joint issues. (No previous yoga experience required.) Physically, Yin Yoga helps to maintain and restore the natural mobility of the joints (range of motion.) Because this practice emphasizes stillness and silence, the best argument for Yin Yoga may be in its ability to help to quiet the mind.
“Yin (Yoga) is for everyone: young, old, fat, thin, sporty, sedentary (especially sedentary!), wound up, chilled out and everything in between. If you have a body and you can breathe, you can practice, and benefit from, yin yoga.” ~ Dearbhla Kelly, M.A.
This is a gentle, nurturing yoga class specifically for prenatal and postnatal bodies. Prenatal Yoga cultivates strength, flexibility and tone, targeting muscles used in childbirth. Potential benefits include decreased lower back pain, improved sleep, and reduced stress and anxiety. A Prenatal Yoga class can also be beneficial in ways you might not expect, such as helping to initiate the mother-child “bonding” process before childbirth and providing a setting to share thoughts, feelings and support with other expectant and postpartum moms. This class provides community, strengthening, empowerment and an opportunity to celebrate the “sacred feminine.”
